Three Bike race Teams In Tie Stubecke and Anderson in Point Lead
Zach-Audy and Baggio-DeFilippo Catch Early Pace-Setters,
Peden-Moebeck In Deadlock for Fourth

Pedaling their dizzy merry-go-round of the big wooden saucer, the field of six-day bicycle racers continued their intermittent and electrifying sprints until 3 a.m. Wednesday, when they settled down to the monotony of the second day of the long grind, leaving three teams tied for first place, three for fourth, one for fifth and two tied for sixth.

At 11 a.m. today the non-stop flight of the bikers had eaten upon 309 miles, and 8 laps, making almost another mile. The riders were all reported in good condition despite the tumble of Best and Audy who went into a jam late last night trying to gain laps.

Shortly before noon today the three teams tied for first place were Stubecke-Anderson with 87 points, Zach and Audy with 30 points and Baggio-Defillipo with 23 points.

One lap behind with 56 points was the team of Peden and Moebeck and tied with them on laps was Elder and DeClerck with 51 points and Lepage and Gachon with 28 points.

Raes and Rys with 26 points were two laps behind and with a three-lap advantage came Praet and Smessaert with 41 points and Ottevararie and van Slambrouke with 41 all tied.

Best and earl with 4 points were five laps behind.

Frank Kramer, chairman of the board of directors of the National Cyclist Association was one of the spectators at the opening last night. Kramer who suffered only one defeat as champion, retired from active racing in 1922.

Hector, who was injured in the preliminary trials Monday night when he took a spill is still in the hospital with a slight concussion of the brain and will not ride in the race.

Stubecke Early Star

Bernhard Stubecke and Sonny Bay Anderson captured their early lead with some great sprinting on that first night of the program that found a large crowd of curiosity cheerers quickly finding their favorites and cheering lustily.

The German-Swedish pair stole the show soon after the start was given when with Stubecke, reputed to be the world’s greatest sprinter, flashing phenomenal speed as he left the pack behind, quickly catching the fancy of the crowd.

Torchy Peden, the favorite with his partner Roy Moebeck, started the first jam of the race after the riders had spent some time getting warmed to their work. Peden started out to steal a few laps on the field, but could not get away.

The successful drive of Stubecke and Anderson followed shortly after and the field again had to work. Stubecke’s speed as he circled the wooden saucer was too much for the rest of them, however and this team soon established a good lead.

Count in Sprints

In addition to gaining their lead at the outset of the long grind, Stubecke and Anderson counted heavily in the sprints. They went into today’s racing with a good margin in these points but with the field still close enough to make the fight even or better during the day.

The teams of Elder and DeClerck, Peden and Moebeck, Zach and Audy and Baggio and Defillipo were well up with none out of the running.

Three spills marked the opening night’s racing. Jules Audy, 18 year ole French Canadian star, was hit by another rider as he was about to leave the track. An injured wrist was heavily taped and he returned to action. Oscar Raes, the Belgian went flying from his wheel later on and collided head on with a post next to the infield. First aid and a rest of 15 minutes however enabled him to get back into the race. Hans Ottevarie took a bump on the leg when several riders spilled a few minutes later, but resumed.

Horace Horder injured in the preview race Monday night was forced to withdraw from the six-day grind. His place was taken by Art Best, Toronto youngster, who teamed with George Earl of Stockholm.
