Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5
The final evening of the Burnaby SixDay had plenty of drama and excitement. As was told to me on Thursday evening by Lorne Atkinson, this was the first complete Six Day race in British Columbia in 70 years and the first in Canada in almost 40 years. I honestly had no idea of the timeline from the last SixDay in B.C. and Canada when I started this but now have even more desire to elevate the status of this race and hopefully make it become a yearly fixture.
Saturday's racing hopefully saw some history in the making as no less than 12 young riders took to the Track, many of them were 14 years old and brand new to track. The Junior racing was divided into two groups with both groups seeing some exceptional racing. First race of the night, even with the faster riders being limited by gearing, brought home the fact that there had to be separation of the groups. The now "seasoned" Junior quartet of Cody Campbell, Nathan MacDonald, Michael Rothengatter, and Naomi Cooper took the lions share of the points in the Points Race and finished in that order. New rider Rachel Canning rode a brilliant race staying on the same lap as the four riders and finished with two points to boot.
In the A Scratch race, Adrian Johnson from Victoria broke into the top three finishing right behind Cody and Nathan, while the B group saw the Schwingboth twins Tavis and Jacob taking turns attacking Rachel (been there myself Rachel) who held on for a valiant second place. Retro Kilo times were fast all around considering most of these riders had never practiced a standing start, even Jacob set down a fast time considering he pulled his wheel on the third lap. The night still had plenty racing for these youngsters and the Point-a-Lap was next up. A well timed attack by Nathan assured him of the win in the A group while Tavis again showed his speed taking most of the laps in the Bs. Most of the newer riders to the track, namely Elliot Abear, Kyle Jasper, Chris Esterzy (who's name was wrongly pronounced all night, but who shrugged it off saying he did not have the heart to say anything), and Matt Whelan all found the racing to be taxiing but still loved the experience. As some of them were Downhill Mountain bikers, they found the constant pedaling and the small seats to be the biggest issues of the night as from my perspective their bike handling skills definitely not an issue. The last race of the night was for all the marbles so to say. The Giant Track frame was up for grabs in the Handicap race. Exploding from the middle group with 3 laps remaining, Mike Rothengatter held off a fast closing back group to cross the line first and win the frame. As he stood and received the frame his smile could be seen from ear to ear and then some.
The A Madison and Omniums also wrapped up on Saturday night. Some last night speed saw Ryan McKenzie hold off the Symmetrics duo of Marsh Cooper and Christian Meier, who kept attacking the Calgarian over the final three Omnium events. Ryan managed to hold of the yellow clad Marsh by two points with Christian finishing in third with myself, Scott Laliberte, falling down to fourth. Rounding out the top six on the Omnium was Murray Solem and John Perkins. In the final night of the Madison, Symmetrics again showed their speed by taking their sixth Madison event and winning the event by 19 laps over second place finishers Laliberte and Solem. Calgarians McKenzie and Abbott were three laps farther back with Luis Bernhardt and Andy George the only other team to finish the six nights of racing.
I would like to take this moment to thank all the volunteers that helped make this a successful event and notify everyone to look towards next year when this event will be back, bigger and better.

Friday Night saw the endurance racers getting a bit of a break as the sprinters came out to play. A smaller than hoped for group showed up but the racing was anything but slow on the evening.
First up was the 200m event. It would be both part of the Omnium and also act as seeding for the later events. The excitement grew as almost as planned rider after rider went faster than the one before. In the group, young Mike Rothengatter was one of the first off but showed good speed and set a time of 14.67, very good for a first time Junior. Times went under 12 seconds finally when the Dr. Walker trio of Matt Barley, Keith Bruneau and Matt Chater set the three fastest times of the night. Second race of the evening was the tactical Win & Out. A race of both flat out early speed and cunning, the race saw both as some riders who did go for the first place placing had to pull out or reshuffle themselves for a later placing. Matt Chater knew what kind of speed he had in his legs and easily took the first place spot getting to sit down early. John Perkins then took off from the pack passed the hurting riders still stinging from their first attempt and held off for second place. A small pack formed consisting of pained riders and those waiting to explode for third and fourth. Barley was the next to take a rest rounding out the podium for this race with Bruneau, Nick Barile, Andy George, and Jimmy Lingwood all able to finish the race and finish in that order. The last two events of the evening were run with heats.
Both the Chariot Race and the Keirin riders were seeded according to how they finished in the 200m. Two riders qualified each in the Chariot Race heats, they included the two Matts, Keith, and John. Two riders went through the reps to make a final of six but the final was once again a run away for the Dr. Walker boys. Last race for the sprinters was the Keirin. With the speed slowly being brought up it looked like there would be a few new faces in the final as some riders got involved in the mix with the fast sprinters. Both Andy and John qualified nicely for the final but those two were the only ones able to crack the top five final. Coming around the final corner of the race the two Matts were shoulder to shoulder with Chater crossing the line first by a tire width. The coveted Sprint Trophy, donated by Black Spire and SC Marine went to Matt Chater.
The only endurance event of the night was the A Madison. Most tired on the night would have to be Andy George who took part in the Sprint Night and then had to change gears, so to say, and race the 75 lap Madison. For the 5th night the duo of Christian Meier and Marsh Cooper took the Madison and extended their lap lead. The Calgary team of Ryan McKenzie and Phil Abbott took second and most importantly took back a lap from the Laliberte/Solem team. Jeff Ain and Gordon Ross from Escape Velocity took third on the night showing some good speed and excellent sprint placing. Andy must have been a little tired on the evening but showed some resiliency by keeping it close with his partner Luis Bernhardt taking a good amount of points but finishing 3 laps down for 5th.

With the B and C Omniums concluding, the four way battle for the A Omnium developing and the Night of Past Champions all happening on the Fourth Night, it was hard to pick a highlight of the night in my opinion.
However once the long list of Past, Present, and Future Champions was listed off and Lorne "Ace" Atkinson took to the track for what was supposed to be a slow parade lap, the highlight was obvious. With fire in his eyes that must have been a 'blazin back in his days of racing, Lorne not only took off on the younger riders that were expecting a slow jaunt around the cote, he got onto the steep track surface itself and proceeded to take a few quick laps. My many thanks to Lorne, his family and all the Past Champions for showing up. Past Champions included: Frank Ludtke, Max Grace, Lorne "Ace" Atkinson, Bruce Spicer, Norman Hill, Paul Enoch, Mandy Poitras, Murray Solem, Claire Cameron, Scott Laliberte, Marsh Cooper, Christian Meier, and many others for their National, International, and Olympic accomplishments.

Day three of the SixDay and with the Bs resting it was time for the C riders to show up and have a go. Seven brave souls took to the track, some in their very first race ever. The pack was as polarized as you could get, with two young women and five old guys battling it out over four races. The Points Race was the first up and it turned out to be a very competitive field with six of the seven riders gaining points. Unfortunately young Rachel Canning, all of 16, who was using one of our rental bikes was horribly undergeared and lost a lap. The race went to Brian Wong who consistently scored points in all five sprints.
Next up was the Retro Kilo and with no aero equipment to be used world record times were safe for the night. The times on the night were surprisingly fast however and just like in world level competition the anchor could be seen coming out for every rider. With under eight seconds separating first and seventh the crowd got into the excitement and cheered each rider on. The last rider, Stuart Lynne, made it even more unbelievable when he came within ( ) that much of beating early race leader Wong and lost out by 4/100 of a second. Third up was the Unknown Distance race and as lady luck would have it both ladies were in great position for the final coming across the line just behind Stuart and Steve Crowe. The smile on Rachel's face could be seen from the back row of the packed house as she collected points in only her third race on the track. The Scratch race was last for these tiring competitors and taking a page out of her '03 National Junior Points Race, Lisa Tasa planned her move and exploded from the pack with just two laps remaining. With tired legs, the pack took their time to react but react they finally did and Lisa held onto fourth with Stuart taking their last race of the night. Thursday will conclude their Omnium race.
The A group's Madison race might be all but wrapped up with the Symmetrics duo holding a commanding lead on laps but the Individual Omnium is heating up with veteran rider and race director Scott Laliberte being chased by both Symmetrics racers and Calgarian Ryan McKenzie. The racing proved to be very tactical last night with the Burnaby invented Miss & Out to Scratch race first off. The boys in yellow controlled the race perfectly and Meier attacked at the right moment to pull out the win. Next was the ever simple Scratch race. But with points on the line and many tired legs in the group, the pack shattered. Three riders took to the front and with Scott being sandwiched between the Symmetrics duo it looked like a victory for one of the young guns. Somehow Laliberte did match both racer's moves and came out with the victory. Last race of the night was the Point-a-Lap and as confusion rained regarding lapping the field and cash from the crowd on the line the win went to a well thought out move by Ryan McKenzie.

Looking up from the infield on Monday night, most racers were surprised and excited to see as many spectators in the stands as the first night. Last night they were even more excited, mostly thanks in part to the stint on City TV's Breakfast Television. Luckily the crowds were not disappointed as they were treated to some fantastic racing in the B group and a some dominating racing in the A group.
The Bs started the night off with a Points Race and once again Recycled Cycles rider Daniel "show some" Harm was out collecting points. It wasn't a total runaway as no less than 10 riders collected points in this race. The final looked almost sewn up nearing the end of the race however until youth and daringness took over. Nathan MacDonald flew from the middle of the pack taking the five points available for that sprint and proceeded to lap the main field. His 25 points was just enough to edge out Daniel and young Cody Campbell in third. Next up for this pack was the always painful Snowball. The first handful of laps saw Cody, Chris Anstee and Adrian Johnson trading off and collecting laps. Being a race with no easy laps yet no all out sprints this is most definitely a race that never lets up, however David Schneider, BC's VP of road and track, took advantage of a slight lull in the pace and slid off the front to gain valuable mid race points entrenching himself in an almost unbeatable lead. That is until Daniel broke the pack open again, caught and passed David and accumulated points after points, putting the lead out of reach.
The Unknown Distance race was next for this group and as this is an event of complete luck, with an awe lot of incredible timing, any rider with a bit of gambler in their blood took their chance off the front, hoping, praying, pleading for the bell to be rung. When it finally was Anselmo "drive me to Vegas" Rossiello showed his fast turn of speed and held off Masters World Champion Chris Anstee, Daniel, Andy White and Cody in that order. The last race of the night was set aside for the B group, and why not? It wasn't like they had not raced hard or long enough over the last two nights! The Point-a-Lap was last on the schedule and as this was a 45 lap race and we only have 33 points accounted for, then I would assume there were plenty of tired legs that needed to pull out. The brave who did finish and collected laps were speedsters Laura Yoisten, and the usual crew of Anselmo, Andy, Nathan and race winner Daniel. A good hard night of racing for the Bs who are most likely looking forward to their night off tonight.
The same cannot be said for the A racers, night two of racing and four to go with no end in the pain and suffering in sight. Marsh Cooper is not a lucky man in the sense of "finding winning tickets on the sidewalk" lucky. This kid goes out and makes his own luck. With rested legs, Marsh split from the pack early and opened a huge 3/4 of a lap gap in the As Unknown Distance. As this race does not favor riders lapping the field, Marsh just maintained his lead and waited for the bell to ring. When it did, race organizer Scott Laliberte just managed to be at the front of the pack and held off the fast field for second place.
Next up was the Point-a-Lap and tired legs from two nights of hard racing were evident. Five riders lapped the pack, which was pulled, leaving the finishing five to collect all the points. Again Marsh won, with teammate Christian Meier, Washington rider Adrian Hegyvary, Calgarian Ryan McKenzie, and local boy John Perkins finishing in that order. The 150 lap Madison was last for these riders, and after a rather tame first night of slinging, Tuesday's affair was anything but. Symmetrics took an early aggressive approach to the event and quickly went on the attack, the pack shattered and racers spent the next hundred and so laps being show a textbook display of speed and precision by the two young pros.

The B group, consisting of 16 riders, got off to a fast start with a Miss and Out. The race was won by Recycled Cycles rider Daniel Harm out of Washington State. Young guns Naomi Cooper and Cody Campbell held their own finishing both in the top five. Their next race was the dreaded Snowball. Paul Craig and Anselmo both took a bunch of laps early on in the race, but as the later laps hold more points, their lead did not hold for very long. New rider Nathan MacDonald showed some great speed and was the next to take a flyer, picking up points lap after lap in the middle part of the race, but then Daniel and Cody came out to play. The two of them gained enough points and also lapped the field to finish first and second.
An accident half way through the race took two riders out for the evening, both Sara Laliberte and Albert Souza were done for the night, hopefully we will see them back racing he rest of the schedule. As the B Madison Group was cancelled a Scratch Race was added to the evening's festivities. The race was once again won by Daniel, with Anselmo, Cody, Brenda Pennell, a transplanted Brit, and Nathan rounding out the top five.
In the A group six teams signed up for the first SixDay to be run in British Columbia in over 2 decades. The field consisted of four local teams, one Washington State team and a pair of riders from Calgary. The first race off was the Madison Pursuit. The race was set up as a seeding event and Calgarians Ryan McKenzie and Philippe Abbott set the fastest time of the night. Next up was the Scratch Race. The race was the full championship 15kms long, and the riders really felt the distance in this one. The attacks were furious from the start with most every rider taking a turn off the front. When the dust settled, event organizer Scott Laliberte beat out Ryan to take the win. The top five consisted of Washingtonian Adrian Hegyvary, newcomer John Perkins and local hard man Murray Solem.
Next up was the Miss and Out, and with riders being pulled every second lap, this race never let up. The front changed hands many times again with most riders wanting to stay out of the melee. With the number of riders dwindling, Scott played devil for a handful of laps until deciding with four riders left to take the front. The final three of Scott, Christian Meier and Ryan used their extra lap to play a bit of cat and mouse. Ryan was the first to attack but Scott responded and just nipped Ryan at the line. The evening's last race was the A Madison. The 30 minute race had three sprints and plenty of attacking. Many time National Espoir Champion Christian Meier had to do the whole race on his own as his Madison and Symmetrics Cycling teammate Marsh Cooper had an exam that ran late. Showing smarts, Christian rode an amazing race to nip the Campione Cycles teammates of Scott Laliberte and Murray Solem by 1 point to take the hard fought win.
